Chris Gilbert
Staff Engineer · Data & Analytics Engineering
Summary
Staff Engineer with deep experience across data engineering and DevOps. I built Jumptech’s data engineering function from the ground up — designing pipelines, warehousing, and reporting infrastructure that turned operational data into actionable insight for the first time. My infrastructure background means I bring a strong operational lens to data work: reliable pipelines, well-tested transformations, and systems that don’t need babysitting. Currently serving customers including British Gas, Scottish Power, EDF, and Chargepoint across the UK, US, and Europe. I think in systems, by understanding not just how things work but why they fail, where complexity hides, and how to build things that stay reliable.

Experience
Staff Engineer — Jumptech
DevOps & Data Engineering · Dec 2021 – Present · Remote, UK
Technical lead across data engineering and infrastructure at a SaaS clean energy installations platform serving major energy and automotive customers.
- Created the data engineering function from scratch: designed and implemented the full pipeline from ingestion to reporting, replacing fragile legacy systems and enabling the business to understand unit economics, customer behaviour, and operational performance for the first time
- Architected the data warehouse on Amazon Redshift with dbt for transformation, Fivetran for ingestion, and AWS Glue + Step Functions for orchestration
- Designed and built a Metabase reporting layer used across the business for operational and commercial reporting
- Wrote and maintained Python-based data pipelines for custom integrations and data quality checks
- Produced analysis of unit economics and product configuration complexity that informed commercial strategy discussions with leadership
- Contributing to AI/LLM integration evaluation, including data sovereignty and GDPR compliance requirements for enterprise customers and secure deployment using AWS Bedrock
- Conducted comprehensive AWS cost analysis identifying £20k/year in savings
- Led infrastructure alongside data engineering: Terraform CI/CD, multi-account AWS migration, serverless platform, DORA metrics, zero-trust networking (Twingate), disaster recovery
- Project work has been the primary basis for six-figure R&D tax credit claims for two consecutive years
